Rollins (2-3-0) (1-0-0)– 1
Florida Southern (1-1-1) (0-1-0) – 0
WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 20, 2017) – The Tars opened up their 2017 Sunshine State Conference schedule with a 1-0 victory over Florida Southern. Rollins was able to prevail behind a towering header from Kiera McMeekan in the 82nd minute off of a corner kick, the first goal of McMeekan's career.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half: Throughout the beginning off the game, both teams looked threatening going forward. Rollins managed to fire off 10 first half shots, while the Mocs tallied eight. This would force goalkeeper Kelly Rowswell into five first half saves. It was a physical battle between the two teams, with the Tars and the Mocs both committing six first half fouls.
Second Half: At the start of the second half, it was the Mocs who were looking like the favorites to open up the scoring, but the Tars defense held strong. The momentum for both teams continued to swing back and forth throughout the half. It wasn't until the 82nd minute that the Tars would take the lead on a corner kick taken by Jill Richards. The Winter Park native would serve the ball to the back post, where McMeekan was waiting to head it back across the goal, and into the top corner. The Mocs scrambled to try and find a late equalizer, but Rowswell and the Tars defense was up for the task. The sophomore goalkeeper would tally two more second half saves, and record her second clean sheet on the season.
- The Tars are now 28-2 all-time against Florida Southern
- Three different Tars have scored a goal this season
- This is McMeekan's second consecutive game recording at least a point, the junior picked up an assist in the Tars last contest against Colorado Mesa
- Four of Rollins' five games this year have been by 1-0 scores: two wins and two losses
Rollins will stay put and host Sunshine State Conference rival Barry in their next home contest at Barker Family Stadium. The match is scheduled for Saturday, September 23, at 7 p.m.
