WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 23, 2017)- During halftime of the Tars 1-0 win over Embry-Riddle, Head coach Alicia Schuck presented former Tars goalkeeper Mary Spring with the Ashley Waplinger award. Every season the Ashley Waplinger Award is given to a Rollins Women's Soccer Graduate who displayed outstanding enthusiasm, dedication, and discipline, acted as an inspiration, and constantly provided encouragement, during her career as a Rollins Tar.
Spring served as the Tars goal keeper for four years, including starting all 23 games on the Tars historic run to the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship match. Overall, Mary appeared in, and started, 71 games in the Blue and Gold. Her name is listed throughout the Rollins record book. Her 71 appearances tie her for 17th in program history in games played, while she ranks third in Rollins history in saves, with 233, tied for third in goals against average, at just 0.92, and second in clean sheets, holding opponents scoreless 30 times in her career.
Head Coach Alicia Schuck says, "Goalkeepers have always been the anchor to our success at Rollins and Mary Spring exemplified outstanding leadership and captainship during her career at Rollins in the net. Mary was one of the best goalkeepers in the country and lead her team to a National Final in 2014. She had a confidence about her that made teammates and defenders play hard and battle for shutouts. Mary's inner competitiveness flourished here, she trained with the men's goalkeepers, she excelled on fitness tests against the field players, and she wanted to be the best version of herself every time stepped on the field. Mary's personality was infectious, and she always was surrounded by teammates who loved her, and encouraged her, on and off the field. Mary is one of those special players that we will always remember and tell stories about for years to come."
