Tars Participate in Day One of ITA South Regional

VALDOSTA, Ga. (September 22, 2017) – The Tars' women's tennis team traveled to Valdosta for the ITA South Region Championship.

In singles competition six Tars took to the court today, with two still standing as they enter the round of 32.  Carlye Goldman fell to Heather Mixon of West Florida in the first round, while Teresa Kaiser earned a first round bye, but dropped her match to third seeded Diana Bogoli of Lynn.  Katie Dyson fell to the sixth seeded Sonja Larsen out of Barry, and Savanna Fuller dropped a three set match to Daniella Barta of host Valdosta State.  Fabiana Vitanza retired Gil Alejandra in the first round and then cruised passed Shelby Zachry.  Alexandra Borg received a first round bye, before downing Katie Reid to advance in the tournament.

Three Rollins teams took part in the first round of doubles play.  Dyson and Goldman received a first round bye before falling to the seventh seeded Taylor Conti and Isabella Mermersky of Palm Beach Atlantic.  Marie Debruyn and Teresa Kaiser won their first round contest against Tonja Fossmeier and Sofia Mustre of AUM, but fell to the sixth seeded pair of Anke Poncelet and Sabrina Schmidt of Valdosta State.  Alexandra Borg and Fabiana Vitanza cruised into the round of 16 with a bye and an 8-1 win against Nathalia Sato and Nathalia Stelzer of Delta State.

Play in the ITA South Region Championship with continue tomorrow, Saturday, September 23 in Valdosta, Georgia. 

Each team in the South Region has an opportunity to compete in the event, and Singles and doubles champions from the four-day tournament will earn an automatic berth to the 2017 Oracle ITA Cup, which is scheduled for October 11-15, 2017. In addition, each divisional singles winner and Oracle Cup Doubles Champion will receive wildcards into the Division I ITA Fall National Championships on November 1-5, 2017 in Indian Wells, California.
