WINTER PARK, Fla. (May 12, 2018) – Rollins played all 14 seniors Saturday, but were held in check by solid Florida Tech pitching and lost its season finale 6-1 Saturday afternoon.
The Tars closed their 2018 campaign with a record of 20-29 overall and 8-22 in Sunshine State Conference play, winning the last two series of the season over Embry-Riddle and FIT. Tech closes its year 20-30, 12-18 SSC.
Four Rollins seniors took the hill Saturday with starter Brett Scafidi taking the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in two innings of work. Mike Gaughan surrendered three runs in two innings of relief, striking out four, and Eric Sexton tossed two scoreless innings. Caleb Jakes finished things off, allowing one run on four hits with four strikeouts in the final three innings.
Florida Tech hurler Ty Cohen tossed a complete game for Florida Tech, picking up the victory. The senior scattered just three Tars hits and allowed the one run with two walks and 15 strikeouts.
Kevin Capella hit 3-5 to lead the Panthers offense while Raul Quintero hit 2-5 with two RBI on a second inning two-run homer. Jacob Buser (1-3) also had two RBI on the day.
Rollins scored in the bottom of the first with Ashline drawing a walk and scoring on a Peterson double.
FIT plated two in the second on Quintero's two-run blast to take a 2-1 lead. The Panthers manufactured three runs in the fourth behind three walks and two base hits.
Tech added another run in the seventh after Zac Orchard doubled and scored on a pair of passed balls.
Prior to the game, Rollins honored seniors Mark Angelo, Grant Ashline, Brian Auerbach, Nick Breen, Brian Brooker, Connor Celantano, Mike Gaughan, Caleb Jakes, Billy Lamm, Ted Meissner, Bryce Peterson, Brett Scafidi, Rob Secrist and Eric Sexton.
