WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 3, 2019) – The Tars baseball team came through with a run in their final at-bat, giving them an opening series win over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon.
Garrett Leonard started on the mound for the Tars, tossing four innings. He only allowed two hits, but both came off the bat of Clayton Jeffries, and both scored runs. Leonard allowed four other runners via walk, but his five strikeouts, and some fine defensive plays behind him limited the damage.
The Tars offense showed life in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jack Gonzalez started things off with a one-out single through the right side, and then moved to second on a walk to Luke Reidy. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position with two outs. Sam LaFontaine then came through, sending a two-strike pitch back up the middle that scored both runners and tied the game.
Senior Whit Drennan entered the game in the fifth and held the Bears scoreless over the next four innings. He spread out two hits and a walk while striking out three. Unfortunately for the Tars, they were unable to produce any runs off of Kanan Butler and Kevin LaRosa.
Anthony Trovato entered the game in the ninth for Rollins, and tossed a scoreless frame. In the bottom of the inning, Devon Ortiz started things off with a single through the left side. He was moved to second on a sac bunt from LaFontaine, and then stole third base. After an intentional walk from Lenoir-Rhyne set up a potential double play, Cameron Meehan was able to lay down a perfect bunt to the right side, scoring the speedy Ortiz, giving the Tars the 3-2 win.
Trovato (1-0) earned the win in his second appearance of the season. Offensively, Rollins was led by Meehan (2-4, RBI) and LaFontaine (1-3, 2 RBI).
The Tars return to action next weekend as they host the nationally ranked West Florida Argonauts. The first game of the series is set for Friday, February 8 at 5:00 PM at Alfond Stadium.
