MELBOURNE, Fla. (February 18, 2019) – Rollins right hander Garrett Leonard was named the Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week, it was announced Monday.
The junior from Fort Mill, South Carolina had a busy week, starting games against Flagler and Bentley. He threw 11 total innings, allowing just three hits and one run (unearned) while racking up 17 strike outs and not issuing a walk.
Due to a rain out of his scheduled start against West Florida, Leonard had to wait two days and got the call at Flagler. He threw six innings, allowing just two hits and an unearned run while striking out 11 in a no-decision. Rollins came back to win the game in the final innings, 6-2.
Back at home against Bentley, Leonard stifled the Falcons line-up, allowing one hit with six strikeouts in five innings of work. He got the win with the Tars coming out on top 12-1.
Through three appearances this season, Leonard has a 1.20 ERA and is second in the SSC with 22 strikeouts to just four walks in 15 innings of work. Teams are hitting .096 against him, allowing just three runs on five hits this season.
The SSC Pitcher of the Week nod is the second of Leonard's career, also winning last season for his no-hitter against Lynn.
Winners of the last seven, Rollins (8-1) next travels to Columbus, Georgia to take on Columbus State February 22-24. The Cougars were runners-up at the NCAA Division II World Series last season. First pitch for the opener is set for 4 p.m. Friday, followed by 1 p.m. starts the following days.
