PEMBROKE, N.C. (February 18, 2019) – Behind an 8-1 start to the 2019 season, Rollins baseball has landed in the national rankings, coming in at No. 25 in the first National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll of the year.
The Tars are ranked for the first time in the NCBWA poll since finishing the 2010 season at No. 22. Rollins was No. 29 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper 2011 preseason poll; finishing the 2010 season No. 15 in their ranking.
Sunshine State Conference foe Tampa (8-2) topped the first NCBWA poll of the season, followed by defending national champion Augustana (S.D.) and West Texas A&M tied for second. Florida Southern (No. 13) and Nova Southeastern (RV) were other SSC schools mentioned in the ranking.
Highlighted by its conference-leading pitching staff, Rollins is off to its best start in nearly a decade. Rollins won the series over Lenoir-Rhyne and swept both West Florida and Bentley with a midweek win over Flagler to boot.
The Tars pitchers lead the SSC with 97 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of just .188. Both Cameron Enck and Garrett Leonard have been named SSC Pitchers of the Week this season. At the plate, Rollins is third in batting average (.307). Joe Cosgrove (.455) and Jack Gonzalez (.424) who has a seven-game hitting streak going, lead Rollins offense.
Rollins takes its seven game winning streak on the road Feb. 22-24, facing 2018 national runner-up Columbus State.
