Tars Fall in Wild Series Finale at Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. (February 23, 2019) – The Tars had a three-run lead slip through their fingers in the final two-innings as Rollins lost to Columbus State 11-10 Sunday afternoon. 

Sam LaFontaine led Rollins (8-4) at the plate, going 3-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored. The junior blasted a homer in the seventh, his second of the season. Brendan Brundage also went 3-5 while knocking in a pair. Kyle Hintz scored three runs and recorded two RBIs on two hits, including his first career triple. 

Garrett Leonard got the start, scattering six hits and allowing three runs, one earned, with six strike outs in five innings. Kyle Kramer took the loss, surrendering the winning run in the ninth. 

Matthew McDade hit 3-5 with two RBIs and Drew Webb went 3-4 to highlight Columbus State (8-4). 

Devin Dudal earned the win on the mound for the Cougars, allowing two hits and two runs over the final three innings. Sam Sowerbrower started, allowing four runs in four innings. 

CSU took a 1-0 lead in the first before Hintz tied it up in the second with a sac fly that scored Cameron Meehan. The Cougars scored two in the third to put the Tars down 3-1. 

In the fourth, LaFontaine knocked in Meehan, Hintz brought Lafontaine across the plate and Brundage gave the Tars a 4-3 lead with an RBI single to score Hintz. 

Rollins had a big fifth inning, scoring four runs to take an 8-3 lead. LaFontaine, Isaiah Russell, Brundage and Nick Santucci all had RBIs in the frame. CSU cut into the lead in the sixth, scoring four of their own to make it an 8-7 score. 

LaFontaine led off the seventh with a homer to left center and Russell hit a sac fly that scored Hintz and put the Tars up 10-7. Columbus State took advantage of Rollins miscues in the eighth and was able to tie the score at 10 heading into the ninth. 

Rollins went down in order in the top of the ninth. McDade led off the bottom with a single for the Cougars, was sacrificed to second and later scored the game winning run on a Kendall Ford double to left center. 

The Tars open Sunshine State Conference play on the road, March 1-3 at Lynn. The Fighting Knights are 8-5 overall and 1-2 in league play this season. First pitch for game one is slated for 2:30 p.m. Fans can follow the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com
