LAKELAND, Fla. (April 6, 2019) – Rollins spotted Florida Southern five runs over the first two innings, but came all the way back to post an 8-6 win over the Mocs on Saturday.
The Tars even their Sunshine State Conference record at 7-7 and improve to 19-12 overall while FSC drops to 19-14, 5-9 SSC.
Whit Drennan earned the win in relief, scattering four hits and allowing one run in six innings. The lefty fanned seven and walked just two. Jimmy Robbins struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season.
Carson King took the loss for the Mocs, allowing two hits and two runs in two and a third innings of work. Cooper Bradford started and surrendered six runs on five hits over the first six innings. FSC spread its seven hits among seven different players.
Rollins had a disastrous first inning, committing two errors and falling into a 4-0 hole. Zach Scott homered in the second to give the Mocs a 5-0 lead.
Southern extended its lead to 6-2 with a run in the fourth.
Montgomery drew a leadoff walk in the fifth and scored on a Gonzalez groundout and closed the gap to 6-3. Brenden Brundage was plunked to start the sixth and scored on a Reidy sac fly. On the Tars next at bad, Montgomery blasted a two-run homer to left and knotted the score at six.
The teams played even until the top of the ninth. Gonzalez started the Tars rally with a single to center. Rollins later had runners on second and third with two outs when Eddie Ayala scored on a passed ball to give Rollins the lead. Reidy singled in Isiah Russell on the next at bat to add an issuance run and put the Tars up 8-6.
Robbins then closed the door in the ninth, striking out the side.
