    The Rollins men’s basketball team begins defense of its Sunshine State Conference Tournament Championship Wednesday night in quarterfinal action with Nova Southeastern. The Tars won at Saint Leo in the season finale and benefited from upsets around the SSC to grab a first-round home game. Rollins tied with NSU and Lynn at 11-9 in league play, but earned the better seed after tiebreaking procedures were put in place. Rollins snapped its six-game losing streak against the Lions on Saturday and welcomed back leading scorer Sam Philpott from injury. NSU has dropped its last three heading into the postseason and lost is trip to Winter Park earlier this year, 81-71. The Tars and Sharks last tangled in Ft. Lauderdale on February 14 with NSU winning 90-71. Rollins is known to be dangerous in the SSC Tournament, starting its run through the 2017 postseason with a last second quarterfinal win over Lynn, eventually beating PBA for the program’s fifth title.

    Rollins travels to Saint Leo Saturday night looking to snap a six-game losing streak and gain positive momentum heading into the postseason. The Tars are sixth in the SSC standings and can earn a SSC Tournament first round home game with a win at Leo and Nova Southeastern loss at Florida Tech. A Tars loss would mean a first round road game at either Eckerd or Florida Southern. Saint Leo has lost its last four and can solidify its spot in the tournament with a win. A loss to the Tars and Florida Tech win would put the Lions on the outside looking in at the bracket. These two teams last met in December with the Tars cruising to an 86-58 victory in Winter Park. The Tars are 3-6 on the road this season while the Lions are 6-6 at home on the year.

Barry is in the driver’s seat, a game up on second place Eckerd and Nova Southeastern, while Florida Southern is 1.5 games back. A pair of Tars wins to close the season clinch a spot in the conference tourney and could mean a first-round home game where Rollins is 11-4 on the season. Second-place Eckerd is guaranteed a spot in the postseason and heads into Winter Park 2-3 over its last five. They beat Embry-Riddle on Valentine’s Day and after playing Rollins, have games with Saint Leo and Palm Beach Atlantic on their schedule. Tars head coach Tom Klusman continues to chase 700 career victories, currently sitting at 691.

The Tars are mired in a four-game losing streak while NSU is trending the other way, with a four-game winning streak heading into Wednesday’s game. The result will be a large factor in not only the SSC title hunt, but also seeding and a first-round home game in the upcoming conference tournament. Tars head coach Tom Klusman continues to chase 700 career victories, currently sitting at 691-404.

PBA was coming off big wins over Florida Southern and nationally ranked Barry before losing at Lynn on Wednesday. The ‘Fish are just 2-9 on the road this season.

Rollins is home for three of its last five games this year where they have won 11 in a row dating back to November. This game is an encore of the epic, 117-111 double overtime Tars win in Lakeland earlier this year. FSC is part of a three-way tie for fifth place in the SSC standings and are coming off upsets over SSC frontrunners Barry and Eckerd last week. Rollins is looking for a third-straight season sweep over the Mocs.

The Tars hold a half-game lead over Barry and a full game on Eckerd. Rollins played without two players due to illness and should be back to full strength against the Spartans. UT is stuck in a seven-game losing streak and welcomes Rollins in the middle of a four-game homestand. With a Tars win, head coach Tom Klusman would tie Tampa’s Richard Schmidt for the most wins in Sunshine State Conference history at 692.

The Tars have kept fans on their toes the last two weeks; beating Tampa on a Jeff Merton buzzer beater, getting past Florida Southern in double overtime, upsetting No. 19 Barry, thumping Florida Tech and then using another Merton buzzer beater so sneak past Lynn on Saturday. Rollins has a half-game lead on Barry and is a full game clear of third-place Eckerd in the league grid. Embry-Riddle is 10th in the conference, but won three of its last five, including an upset of their own over nationally ranked Barry. The Tars are 3-3 on the road this season while ERAU stands at 9-5 in the ICI Center on the year.Tars head coach Tom Klusman is 691-400 all-time and with a Tampa loss at Saint Leo on Wednesday, he ties UT’s Richard Schmidt for the most wins in SSC history.
