WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 29, 2017) – Rollins ran its winning streak to five games and stayed unbeaten in the Sunshine State Conference after a 92-83 victory over Embry-Riddle Wednesday.
Eric Castaneda poured in 20 points on 5-of-9 shooting (four 3-pointers) and a 6-of-6 night at the free throw line to lead Rollins (5-2, 3-0 SSC). Deion Clark added 10 points a career-high 16 rebounds while also handing out five assists. Jeff Merton added 17 points with Sam Philpott chipping in 15.
Nashad Mackey paced Embry-Riddle (4-4, 0-3 SSC) with 17 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Rudy Bibb-Boyd scored 15 points and Elijah Jenkins added 14.
Rollins shot 51 percent (31-61) from the field and hit 11-of-22 from long range. The Eagles were just 39 percent (22-66) from the floor and 10-of-34 from beyond the arc. Rollins was beat on the glass 41-35.
A 6-0 Tars run put the hosts up 19-13 early on a Daniel Loh jumper. The lead was extended to 34-23 after Philpott tipped in a Merton miss with 6:34 left in the half.
The Eagles chipped away and came closed the gap to 40-39 before a Philpott layup put the Tars ahead 42-39 at the break.
Clark and Merton sparked Rollins to start the second with the lead going back to 10, 52-42 with 17 minutes to play. ERAU got as close as seven before another Tars, led again by Clark, got Rollins ahead 72-58 with 10:49 left.
Rollins weathered another Eagles run that shrunk the Tars lead to 81-76 with 5:46 to play. The Tars then went 7-of-8 at the free throw line down the stretch and got key stops and held on for the win.
