WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 12, 2018) – Jakobi Bonner recorded a second double-double of the young season to lead Rollins past Ave Maria 84-75 on Monday night.
The victory gets Tars (3-0) head coach Tom Klusman one step closer to his next milestone with career win No. 696.
Bonner tallied 20 points and pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds; his second double-double and second time reaching 20 points this season. The Winter Springs native went 12-of-15 at the free throw line on the night. Sheldon Odunna added a career-best 13 points off the bench while Connor Mckim chipped in 11 points. Daniel Loh and Parker Davis both scored 10.
Romello Bates led Ave Maria (4-1) with 22 points while Greenan Sullivan netted 19 off the bench.
Rollins shot 54 percent from the floor and outrebounded AMU 45-28. The Tars zone defense forced the Gyrenes to 14-of-42 from three-point range.
The Tars posted a 19-10 advantage at the midway point of the first half, but Ave Maria came back to knot the score at 31 with 3:27 left in the first. Davis converted a conventional three-point play and, after an AMU bucket, Odunna hit from deep at the buzzer to put the Tars on top 37-33 going into the locker room.
The Tars started the second on a 10-2 run and eventually pushed the advantage to a game-high 13 (51-38) with 16:14 to play.
The pesky Gyrenes kept it close and got to within 65-63 with 5:27 left. Davis made good on a free throw and Loh scored four-straight points to give Rollins some breathing room. The Tars held an 80-75 lead with 36 seconds on the clock and were able to convert at the free throw line to seal the win.
After playing three games in four days, Rollins is off for a week before welcoming Southeastern University to Warden Arena on Monday, November 19 at 7 p.m. Fans can watch the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com and listen locally on 91.5 FM WPRK.
