LAS VEGAS, Nev. (December 19, 2018) – Rollins shot a season-low 31 percent and couldn't recover from a slow start, falling to Tarleton State 72-53 Wednesday to close the SportTours Holiday Hoops Las Vegas Classic.
Rollins drops to 7-4 overall heading into a 10-day holiday break. Tarleton State improved to 9-2 with a sweep at the event.
Josh Hawley was a force for the Texans with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Randall Broddie hit all five 3-point attempts and added 15 points and five assists. Corinthian Ramsey scored 12 and Richie Mitchell 11.
A Davis three-pointer put the Tars ahead early, but they missed their next eight shots in a row while TSU hit four three-pointers and two jumpers in the span to put the Tars down 17-3. The trend would continue as Rollins trailed 36-15 at the break. The Tars had scored at least 32 points in the first half each game this season.
After trailing by as many as 27 early in the second, Davis sparked an 11-0 Tars run over a three-minute stretch and cut the lead to 46-30 with 13 minutes to play.
The Texans regained control coming out of a timeout as Broddie started to heat up from the outside. Rollins later trailed by 21, 60-39, with just under seven minutes left. The closest the Tars could get would be 18 points three times down the stretch.
Rollins went 6-of-33 in in the first half and ended the game 20-of-63; including an 11-of-35 mark from long range. TSU hit 14-of-28 beyond the arc and finished 56 percent from the field overall. The Tars were beat on the glass 38-24, but forced 17 turnovers while committing a season-best six.
The Tars are back in action on Saturday, January 29 when they travel to Saint Leo and look to pull even in Sunshine State Conference play. The Lions are 4-7 overall and match Rollins at 1-2 in league play.
