TAMPA, Fla. (January 9, 2019) – Rollins dug itself a double-digit hole in the first half was never able to recover as the Tars fell to Tampa 75-62 on Wednesday.
The loss is a third-straight for Rollins and puts it record at 8-7 overall and 2-5 in Sunshine State Conference play. UT improves to 9-5, 3-3 SSC.
Connor Mckim had the hot hand for the Tars, pumping in 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. The junior also handed out five assists. Hutton Yenor scored 13 off the bench while Jakobi Bonner (11 points) and Eric Castaneda (10 points) also scored double-digits. Daniel Loh hauled in 10 rebounds.
The bulk of Tampa's scoring was handled by Vincent Biffle's 23 points and Anthony Gamble's 22 points. Cedric Belemene tallied 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Rollins shot 46 percent on the night, but were 7-of-23 from long range and 3-of-7 at the free throw line. UT hit 43 percent from the floor and outrebounded Rollins 41-27.
After a Mckim opening bucket, the Spartans rolled off eight straight points, but the Tars answered and tied the score at eight after five minutes of play.
A 13-0 UT run over the next six minutes quickly put the Tars in a 21-8 hole. Rollins twice got as close at eight in the late stages of the half before going into the locker room behind 38-23.
Rollins trailed by as many as 18 in the middle of the second before a three-pointer by Castaneda, Bonner layup and deep three-pointer from Mckim closed the gap to 69-60 with 2:52 left. UT then squashed the Tars comeback attempt by scoring the game's next six points and went up 15 with less than a minute to play.
