MELBOURNE, Fla. (February 27, 2019) – Rollins snapped an eight-game skid Wednesday, beating Florida Tech 84-72 in the penultimate game of the season.
Connor Mckim put on a shooting display and led the Tars (10-17, 4-15 SSC) with 27 points. The junior was 9-of-16 from the field and hit 6-of-11 from beyond the arch. He also tallied six rebounds and five assists.
The SSC's second leading scorer Derek Murphy went off for Florida Tech (8-19, 2-17 SSC), pouring in 40 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Trey Schaneville added 15 points.
Rollins shot 49 percent in the game, going 11-of-27 from deep. Florida Tech was held to 43 percent shooting and just six, 3-pointers. The Tars also won the glass 46-31.
Mckim scored the game's first five points as Rollins would not trail the entire night. The Tars grabbed a 11-2 lead after the first five minutes, but FIT cut it to one, four minutes later. Another 5-0 Mckim surge go the Tars back on track and the lead would balloon to 35-25 with 1:45 left in the half. After a Antonis Pefanis three-pointer, Yenor converted a lay-up and later hit a tip-in at the buzzer, sending Rollins into the locker room with a 39-28 lead.
The Panthers got to within four early in the second half, but Recio sparked a Tars run that was capped with a Yenor triple, pushing Rollins' advantage to 55-43.
Rollins led 72-62 with just under five minutes left and Tech went on a 6-0 run to close the gap to 72-68 with 3:25 to play. Consecutive buckets from Castaneda, Yenor and Bonner quickly got the Rollins advantage back to double digits and the Tars cruised the rest of the way.
