Rollins Sits Just Four Points Behind Three-Way Tie for Second
MELBOURNE, Fla. (January 26, 2018) – Entering into their 2018 campaign, the Rollins men's lacrosse team has been tabbed fifth on the Sunshine State Conference Preseason Poll, league officials announced Friday. Voting is conducted by conference head coaches.
The 2017 SSC regular season and tournament champions, the University of Tampa, were selected as the preseason favorites to win the league title. The Spartans received 49 total votes, and seven first place votes.
Florida Southern College, Florida Tech, and Saint Leo University tied for second place in the poll at 33 total votes apiece, with the Lions earning the remaining first place vote. Behind the Tars, who received 29 total votes, is Lynn University, Palm Beach Atlantic University, and Embry-Riddle in sixth through eighth, respectively.
After a 2017 season that saw the Sunshine State Conference regular season conclude with a three-way tie between Rollins, Florida Southern, and Lynn, the league is once again expected to be an all-out battle for tournament contention. The difference between five teams on the poll this season is just six points, as the second place trio earned 33 points apiece, while Rollins and Lynn were given 29 and 27 points, correspondingly.
Tampa (15-5, 5-0) won their fourth consecutive SSC regular season and tournament titles in 2017. The Spartans earned an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA regional tournament where they traveled to and defeated Lenoir-Rhyne University 11 to 8.. Tampa ended its season in a, 12-10, national semifinal loss to top-seeded Limestone. UT ranks No. 6 in the 2018 USILA and Lacrosse Magazine Division II preseason polls.
Sunshine State Conference play opens up on March 17th with Palm Beach Atlantic hosting Embry-Riddle. The SSC Championship will take place on April 27th and April 29th at a non-predetermined site. The NCAA Division II postseason for men's lacrosse will start at non-predetermined sites Friday, May 11th and concludes Sunday, May 27th in Boston, Massachusetts.
