SAINT LEO, Fla. (April 26, 2018) – After trailing for most of the game, Rollins made a late push and got to within a goal, but couldn't pull ahead and fell to fifth-ranked Saint Leo 9-6 in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament semifinals.
The fourth-seed Tars end their season at 7-7 while the top-seed Lions improve to 14-1 and will face Tampa Saturday for the championship.
Kyle Pauwels scored five goals while Jake Gilmour racked up two goals and two assists for Saint Leo
Andrew Hoemann saw 20 shots and racked up 11 saves for the Tars while his counterpart Thomas Tatarian tallied 15 saves on 21 shots.
Leo got on the board less than three minutes into the game, but Schimek answered with an unassisted score two minutes later. The Lions tallied the next two scores and took a 3-1 lead after the first.
Colling got the Tars back on track with a goal early in the second, but back-to-back scores by Pauwels, the last one coming with just eight seconds on the clock, put the host Lions on top 5-2 at intermission.
The teams traded scores back and forth in the third with Ashton and Slocumb finding pay dirt for the Tars in the frame. Rollins then headed into the fourth trailing 7-4.
After nearly 10 minutes of a defensive stalemate, Colling pulled Rollins to within 7-5 and a minute later Ashton found the back of the net to make it a 7-6 score. The Lions however tacked on two quick goals late and Rollins was never able to get any closer.
The loss closes the Tars 2018 season with a record of 7-7 and 4-3 mark in the Sunshine State Conference.
