WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 2, 2019) – The Rollins men's rowing team kicked off its 2019 spring season at the annual Metro Cup on Lake Maitland, Saturday.
The two men's events took place early in the morning under perfect weather conditions and flat waters.
The Varsity 4 of Mia McKay (cox), Connor Stolp, Mike Pakuris, Jose Fernandez and Sean Boyd kicked off the morning. The boat was beat off the line by the Central Florida boat and just never able to make up that difference. Rollins posted a time of 7:09.1 while the Central Florida crew stopped the clock at 7:02.9.
"The gap never really widened after the start and the piece itself was okay for March 2nd,: commented Head Coach Shawn Pistor. "The nice thing is we have the time and training in place to improve and continue to bring up the stroke rate."
The next boat on the water for the men was the Novice 4. Mia McKay and Jose Fernandez were joined in the boat by Tim Edwards, Cameron Harris and Jake Wheeler and came out with a victory. Rollins and UCF were even off the line in this race and as Rollins began to move away, UCF caught a slight crab allowing the gap to open up. The race looked like an easy win but with 200m to go, Rollins caught a crab of its own, narrowing the gap and making the race look close. The Tars covered the course in 7:25.2, edging its opponent by three seconds.
"This was a good learning experience for this crew and chalking up a win is a great way to start the season," added Pistor.
The Tars will be back on Lake Maitland next weekend for the Rollins Invitational against the Stetson Hatters.
