Tars Scrap For Win in SSC Opener

Rollins (3-0-1, 1-0-0 SSC)) – 1
Florida Southern (2-1-0, 0-1-0 SSC) – 0

WINTER PARK, Fla. (September 20, 2017) – The No. 20 Tars entered Sunshine State Conference play, and debuted at Barker Family Stadium, with a hard fought, shutout, win over the Florida Southern Mocs.  Fritz Engel tallied the only goal of the 1-0 affair, moving Rollins to 3-0-1 on the year, and 1-0-0 in conference play, while Florida Southern falls to 2-1-0, and 0-1-0 in SSC action.

First Half:
Both teams battled back and forth, each manufacturing chances in the opening 45 minutes.  Rollins keeper Julian Grundler finished the first half with three saves, and turned away multiple one-on-one chances from the Mocs.  Through the first half the Mocs outshot the Tars 6-5, while Rollins forced Florida Southern keeper Benny Yusufoglu into two saves against Grundler's three.

Second Half: The action would intensify in the second half as Rollins would work to take a grip on the game.  Florida Southern did squander a golden chance midway through the period, missing an open net when Grundler was caught out, charging a long pass.  We would remain scoreless until the 81st minute, when Rollins' increased pressure earned them a corner kick.  Junior captain Johnny Nartowicz took the corner which was deflected by a charging Liam Luke, and fell to senior Fritz Engel as he attacked the back post.  The defender, who had been yellow carded earlier in the match, put the ball into the roof of the net to give the Tars the lead.  Florida Southern would pick up the pressure looking for an equalizer, but it was Grundler who would stifle their most promising attack in the closing seconds to solidify the Rollins win.

  • The Tars are now 51-13-10 all-time against Florida Southern.
  • Liam Luke's deflection, on the game winner, earned him an assist, his first point in a Rollins uniform.
  • Head Coach Keith Buckley improves to 309-148-30, as he is into his 27th season at the helm of the Rollins soccer program.

Rollins will continue Sunshine State Conference play with a trip to Miami to take on the Barry University Buccaneers.  The match is scheduled for Saturday, September 23, at 6 p.m.
