Tars Come Out on the Wrong Side of Top-20 Battle

No. 17 Rollins (5-3-1, 3-3-0 SSC) – 0
No. 8 Palm Beach Atlantic (8-0-2, 4-0-1 SSC) – 1

WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 7, 2017) – Deadlocked for more than 85 minutes, No. 17 Rollins could not hold on, falling to No. 8 Palm Beach Atlantic 1-0.  The loss drops the Tars' overall record to 5-3-1, while they move to .500 in Sunshine State Conference play, at 3-3-0.  The Sailfish improve to 8-0-2 overall, and remain undefeated at 4-0-1 in conference action.

First Half: The Sailifsh controlled the pace of play for much of the half, but both teams had chances in the opening 45.  Palm Beach Atlantic outshot Rollins with seven attempts to the Tars' four.  PBA also earned nine corner kicks against Rollins' two.  Despite all that, the Tars put two shots on target while Julian Grundler was only forced into one save.

Second Half: The second period looked much like the first.  Both teams battled, and each team built attacks that looked as though they would allow them to grab a lead.  The eventual breakthrough did not come until the 86th minute.  Juan Pablo Puelma gathered a loose ball in the midfield and got lucky as his pass deflected perfectly into the path of Cleef Desir who dribbled into the Rollins 18-yard box and blasted a hard low shot into the net.  Rollins desperately floated balls into the box in the final minutes, hoping for an equalizer, but could not find the final touch necessary.

  • The Tars are now 15-5-0 all time against the Sailfish.
  • The Tars are now 1-2 against ranked completion on the season, as the Tars have now played three top-10 opponents.
  • Head Coach Keith Buckley moves to 311-151-30, as he is in his 27th season at the helm of the Rollins soccer program.

The Tars will look to rebound with a trip to St. Petersburg to take on the Eckerd Tritons; kickoff is scheduled for Wednesday, October 11, at 7 p.m.
