WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 15, 2017) – Three Tars have earned spots on the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association South Region Teams. Stefan Avram, Ben Grant, and Fritz Engel have each earned D2CCA All-South Region Second Team honors, it was announced Wednesday.
Fritz Engel, a Berlin, Germany native, has been named to the Second Team as a constant presence on the Tars backline this year, appearing in all 17 games, including making 16 starts. The rangy defender has been a key part of a defense that surrendered just over one goal per game. Engel has also contributed to the attack this year, tallying two goals, and a team leading four assists. He headed home the game winner against Florida Southern, and his four assists are a tie for seventh most in the conference. Fritz has been a constant presence on both the Athletic Director's and Conference Commissioner's Honor Rolls, he was named First Team All-Sunshine State Conference, to the SSC All-Tournament Team, and a First Team CoSIDA Academic All-Region performer.
Stefan Avram earned a spot on the Second Team as his form developed down the stretch run of the 2017 season, making a big contribution to the Tars in SSC play. The Orlando, Florida native finished the season second on the squad, and tied for second on the SSC leaderboards, with nine goals, including three game winners. Avram tallied his one assist of the year in the Tars' upset win over Palm Beach Atlantic in the SSC Tournament Semifinals. The junior scored four times in the Tars' rout of Saint Leo, and twice in the Tars postseason clinching win against Florida Tech on October 24. Avram's performance against the Panthers, in the final week of the regular season, earned him SSC Offensive Player of the Week honors, while he also received a Second Team All-SSC nod.
Ben Grant received Second Team honors after captaining the Tars throughout his junior campaign. The midfielder has been one of the Tars' most consistent players throughout the season, starting all 17 games. The Manchester, England native led both the team, and SSC, with 10 goals, while recording three games winners, including Rollins' overtime score against conference foe Eckerd. The junior also added one assist, in the Tars' SSC Tournament opening round victory over Florida Tech. The junior ended the season with 21 points, leading Rollins and finishing second in the conference. Grant also received Second Team All-Conference honors.
The 13 players on the First Team advance to the All-America ballots. The Division II Conference Commissioners Association encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education. The CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact Division II intercollegiate athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities.
The Tars' season came to an end in the SSC Tournament Finals against Tampa. Rollins defeated Florida Tech in the first round of the tournament, then handed Palm Beach Atlantic their first loss in the semifinals. Rollins, however, conceded a late penalty in the Finals against the Spartans to fall 2-1.
