Lions Trip Up Tars in Double Overtime

WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 9, 2019) – The Tars dominated Saint Leo everywhere except the scoreboard, as they Lions downed Rollins 3-2 in double overtime, at Barker Family Stadium.  With the loss, the Tars drop to 2-5-1 overall, and 1-2-1 in Sunshine State Conference action.  Saint Leo improves to 5-4 in 2019, and 2-2-0 in SSC play.

Max Muecke tallied one goal for the Tars, while Danny Senior recorded the other.  Logan Laskey recorded the Tars' only assist on the day.

The Lions got goals from Elias Niesigk, Dylan Moriera, and Gabriel Rickmann.  Federico Toschi and Federico Tellechea each registered helpers for Saint Leo.

Maximillian Obermeier made one save, playing the full 101 minutes in net for Rollins.  Wessel Berenschot made fives, while allowing two goals for Saint Leo.

Rollins controlled the earl portion of the game, but Saint Leo would take the lead against the run of play in the 25th minute.  The Lions earned a free kick and lofted the ball into the Tars' penalty area.  Tellechea gathered the ball and dished it to Niesigk who put a shot in the top corner of the net.  Saint Leo would take the lead into the locker room.

Rollins would equalize early in the second half when Muecke converted a penalty.  Saint Leo would pull in front again in the 67th minute, again after Rollins had dominated play.  The Lions earned another free kick; and the Tars failed to clear; the ball fell to Rickmann and he took a shot from just outside the box into the bottom corner. Senior would pull Rollins even again in the 72nd.  The freshman got on the end of a Laskey cross after a spell of maintained pressure by the Tars.  Rollins would control the final minutes of the match to, but could not find a winner.

Neither team could find a foot hold in the first overtime and the match continued to a second extra period.  Early in the second extra period the Tars would turn the ball over in their own half.  Toschi took a shot, and Oberemeier made an athletic save, but the ball deflected to Moriera who put the ball in the open net for the winner.

Notes:

  • Rollins took 19 shots to Saint Leo's eight, and put seven on target, while Saint Leo only managed 4.  The Tars took seven corner kicks against the Lions three.
  • Danny Senior's goal was his first in the Blue and Gold.
  • Max Muecke's goal was the junior captains first of the 2019 season, and third of his career.

The Tars will stay at the friendly confines of Barker Family Stadium where they will take on Palm Beach Atlantic.  Kickoff against the Sailfish is set for Saturday, October 12, at 6 p.m.
