WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 21, 2017) – Rollins hosted the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational, with a number Tars shining throughout the event. Members of the men's tennis team competed in a pair of doubles brackets, and five singles Flights over the two day event.
Nicolo DeFraia advanced to the finals in the Men's Singles Flight A Bracket, highlighting the Tars play. Guillermo Nicolas also competed in the primary singles bracket winning his first match. Atakan Gezer won his first match in Flight B, but eventually fell in the third place match. Ziad Melhaoui was also featured in Flight B. A pair of Tars had good showing in Flight C. Daniel Ferl finished in third with a 6-1, 1-6 (10-6) victory in third place match, while Francesco Racanelli won the consolation portion of the bracket. Cody Gubin and Luke Horan each managed one victory in Flight D. Salvador Bolanos was crowned the champion in Flight E, winning the final match by a score of 6-2, 6-3. Eric Scarlett also competed in Flight E, earning one win for the tournament.
DeFraia excelled in doubles play also, teaming up with Nicolas, to capture the Men's Doubles Flight A championship. The pair was pushed in the semifinals, winning 9-7, before besting their finals opponents 8-5. Gezer and Melhaoui were forced into the consolation bracket in Flight A, but won a pair of contests over the two-day event. Ferl and Horan advanced to the finals of Flight B, before succumbing, while Racanelli and Gubin, and Scarlett and Bolanos also competed in the bracket.
Rollins will conclude their fall schedule at the FIT Clay Court Invitational, taking place in Melbourne, Florida on the first weekend of November.
