Tars Predicted to Finish Fifth in SSC

MELBOURNE, Fla. (January 25, 2018) – Rollins has been selected fifth in Sunshine State Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, league officials announced Thursday.

Rollins is coming off an 11-12 season that saw them advance to the first round of the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to Valdosta State.  The Tars, who are ranked No. 16 in the opening ITA National Rankings of 2018, return 10 players, including All-SSC Honorees Sami Kirberg, ranked No. 17 in the South Region for singles, and Cody Gubin.  Rollins also welcomes five new faces to the roster, including Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz, who is ranked No. 19 in the first National Singles Poll of the year.  Nicolas-Ruiz partners with fellow newcomer Nicolo De Fraia to create the No. 8 doubles team in the South Region.

Reigning SSC Champions and National Runner-Up Barry hold the top spot in the poll, and received eight first place votes.  The Lynn Fighting Knights enter the ranks at No. 2, and garnered the only other first place tally.  Saint Leo and Embry-Riddle slot in at No. 3 and No. 4, both of who are ranked in the top-10 nationally.  The Tars round out the top five, earning 39 total votes, just two behind the Eagles' 41.

The Tars' season kicks off on February 3 when they visit Deland to take on Division I Stetson, first serve against the Hatters is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.  Rollins dives into conference play on Saturday, February 17, when they host No. 6 Lynn.  The SSC Tournament will take place at the home of the Fighting Knights, Boca Raton, Florida, between April 19-21.
