ORLANDO, Fla. (February 23, 2018) – The Tars' outstanding effort against the top-ranked team in the nation was just not enough, as No. 14 Rollins fell to No. 1 West Florida 5-4 at the USTA National Campus. Rollins got wins in the first three singles spots as their upset bid fell just short. Rollins falls to 1-4 on the year, while the Argos improve to 6-0.
The Tars duo of Nicolo De Fraia and Guillermo de Nicolas-Ruiz, who came into the match ranked as the No. 8 team in the South Region, held the first court, winning 8-5. The Tars fought hard in the second and third position, even holding leads, but Rollins could not pull out another victory, as they finished team play down 2-1.
Nicolas-Ruiz cruised to the Tars' first singles win. The junior downed the South Region's No. 19 player, Lucas Sanchez, 6-0, 6-2. Rollins second win came courtesy of De Fraia, in the top position. The Cagliari, Spain native bested sophomore Serdar Bojadjiev, the No. 7 singles player in the country, in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. The Rollins junior controlled the baseline, and attacked the net efficiently, as he stayed unbeaten on the year. Ziad Melhaoui battled hard in the fifth set, but fell 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, in what proved to be the clinching match for West Florida. Sami Kirberg ended the night on a positive note for Rollins, taking the second position match. The sophomore, powered by rowdy cheering section, recovered from a first set loss, and won a marathon second set, defeating the country's No. 40 singles player Nicolas Lecoture, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
Rollins concludes a busy week by hosting Davenport to the Bert Martin Tennis Complex on Sunday, February 25, at 10 a.m.
