WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 6, 2018) – The Tars asserted their dominance in a clash of nationally ranked foes, downing No. 25 Concordia (N.Y.) 7-2. With the victory the No. 14 Tars improve to 3-5 on the season. This was the first blemish on the Clippers' record, as they fall to 3-1 in 2018.
The Tars started strong, sweeping doubles play. Sami Kirberg and Frederick Danielson would combine to control the third position match, capturing the Tars fist win of the day, 8-1. Nicolo De Fraia and Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz captured the Tars' second win, upsetting the No. 8 doubles pair in the country, Evangelisti and Chevalier, by a score of 8-4. In the second position, Ziad Melhaoui and Atakan Gezer completed the sweep, downing the No. 7 team in the East Region 9-7.
Rollins took two of the first three singles matches, clinching the overall victory. Nicolas-Ruiz, the No. 19 singles player in the nation, cruised home on the third court for the Tars, defeating Henry Masters 6-1, 6-0. Daniel Ferl won the decisive match without losing a set, beating Tomer Mendler 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth spot. Sami Kirberg, the No. 17 player in the South Region, would add to the Tars' total, as he was triumphant over Evangelisti, the No. 4 player in the East Region. The sophomore would recover from an opening set defeat to sail in the final sets, eventually winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Cody Gubin would pick up another three set win for Rollins in the sixth position, 6-4, 6-7(4), 11-9.
The Tars will remain at home, with another out of conference matchup against Wayne State, this Friday, March 9, at 10 a.m.
