MELBOURNE, Fla. (March 12, 2018) – Junior Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz has been named the Sunshine State Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday. This is the first Player of the Week award for the transfer from Tennessee Tech.
Nicolas-Ruiz went undefeated in the Tars' three wins this week. With partner Nicolo De Fraia, the Villanueva de la Cañada, Spain native went 3-0 in doubles play, with each win coming from the top position. In singles action Nicolas-Ruiz picked up a pair of second spot wins, and one win on the third court.
The week started with an upset win over the No. 8 duo in the nation of Evangelisti and Chevalier from Concordia (N.Y.). Nicolas-Ruiz who is ranked as the No. 19 singles player in Division II, then sailed by the Clippers' Masters in singles play, 6-1, 6-0. It was another perfect match for the junior against Wayne State, winning the doubles match 8-6, and taking a third set victory in the second position, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2. Nicolas-Ruiz's week was capped off by an impressive performance against No. 19 Hawaii Pacific. He and De Fraia upset the No. 20 doubles team in the country with an 8-6 top position win. Then the Nicolas-Ruiz defended his No. 19 ranking with a convincing win over the No. 27 player in country, 7-5, 6-2.
On the year Nicolas-Ruiz is 7-3 in doubles play, all coming out of the first position, with De Fraia; the pair is also undefeated against nationally ranked opposition. He is also 7-3 in singles play, 3-1 in the second spot, and 4-2 in the third.
The Tars continue their Spring Break trip in Las Vegas with a match against No. 20 Midwestern State today, Monday, March 12. First serve against the Mustangs is set for 5 p.m.
