Tars Tripped Up By Midwestern State

No. 14 Rollins – 4
No. 20 Midwestern State – 5

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (March 12, 2018) – The Tars were upset by Midwestern State in a tightly contested matchup, 5-4, as they reach the mid point of their Las Vegas schedule.  Rollins falls to 5-6 on the year, while the Mustangs improve to 7-2.

The Tars were only able to capture one singles point, putting them on the back foot to start the match.  Nicolo De Fraia and Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz, the No. 8 doubles partnership in the South Region, held serve with an 8-6 win in the top position.  Freshman Atakan Gezer and junior Ziad Melhaoui forced a tiebreak on the second court, but could not come away with the point.

Cody Gubin brought the match even with a win in the sixth spot.  The Memphis, Tennessee native eased home with a 6-3, 6-2 win.  The Mustangs won the next two matches, pushing the Tars to the brink.  Rollins responded with wins by No. 19 Nicolas Ruiz, who took a straight set victory on the second court, 7-5, 6-2, and Gezer, who took down the No. 11 player in the South Central Region, Sundaram, in three sets, 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4.  The Tars, however, could not complete the comeback, as the Mustangs took the first position match and the win.

The Tars will continue play in Las Vegas on Wednesday, March 14, when they take on their third consecutive ranked team, the No. 23 Rattlers of St. Mary's (Texas).  First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m.
