Tars Shift in National Poll, Kirberg Debuts in Singles Rankings

TEMPE, Ariz. (April 11, 2018) – Rollins jumped six spots in the national rankings, as they battled some of the top teams in the nation last week.  The Tars settle at No. 43 in the ITA Division II National Rankings.  Nicolo De Fraia and Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz are joined in the singles rankings this week by newcomer Sami Kirberg, while De Fraia and Nicolas-Ruiz remain in the national doubles poll.

The Tars currently sit at 6-12 overall and 1-5 in Sunshine State Conference play.  Rollins is seventh in the conference standings as they head into the final week of the regular season.  Seven SSC schools are listed in the national poll, including three in the top-5. 

Nicolo De Fraia drops three spots this week, falling to No. 25 in the national rankings.  The Cagliari, Italy native is 10-7 on the year, playing exclusively from the first position.  He has picked five wins against nationally ranked competition. 

Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz jumped nine places after defeating Phillip Hoffmann of Palm Beach Atlantic, who is ranked among South Region singles players.  Overall, the junior transfer is 11-7 from the first, second, and third courts. 

Sami Kirberg makes his first appearance in the national poll, after opening the year ranked No. 17 in the South Region.  The sophomore from Fort Lauderdale debuts at No. 66 in nation, with a 5-4 mark in the second and third spots, and one win against a nationally ranked opponent. 

De Fraia and Nicolas-Ruiz are 8-7 in the top position, and fall one spot to No. 11 in the national doubles poll.  The pair have picked up two wins against nationally ranked teams, but will look to right the ship this week, after losing four consecutive contests. 

The Tars were scheduled to face No. 44 Florida Southern on Tuesday, April 10, but the match had to be postponed due to weather, and will now take place at Florida Southern, on Friday, April 13, at 3 p.m.  The Tars will close the regular season in Winter Park against Florida Tech.  First serve against the Panthers is set for Saturday, April 14, at 3 p.m.
