Rollins Picks-Up SSC Victory Over Mocs

No. 43 Rollins – 5
No. 44 Florida Southern – 4 

LAKELAND, Fla. (April 10, 2018) – Rollins jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in doubles action, before sealing a 5-4 victory over Florida Southern with wins in the first three singles spots.  With the victory the No. 43 Tars improve to 7-12 overall and 2-5 in Sunshine State Conference play.  The No. 44 Mocs fall to 8-10 on the year, and finish the regular season 2-6 against SSC competition. 

Sami Kirberg and Cody Gubin teamed up to earn the Tars first point, cruising in the third doubles position, 8-2.  Nicolo De Fraia and Frederick Danielson would tally the second Rollins point, taking an 8-5 decision in the second doubles spot.  The Mocs would take the top doubles match, as the Tars would lead 2-1 after team play. 

Sami Kirberg, who recently jumped into the national rankings at No. 66, picked up a win in the first position, defeating No. 72 Alvaro Arias in three sets 6-0, 5-7, 6-2.  After the Mocs picked up a win, Rollins would reel off a pair of back to back wins, sealing the overall victory for Rollins.  Atakan Gezer would tally the fourth point for Rollins.  The freshman defeated No. 53 Victor Ahlbeck 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.  Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz would register the fifth and decisive point for the Tars.  The junior downed Miguel Alvarez-Hevia in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (5), to clinch the win. 

The Tars close out the regular season with another SSC match up.  Rollins will take on Florida Tech at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 in Winter Park.
