The Tars are set for the Sunshine State Conference Tournament, coming into it as the sixth seed, after sweeping two matches in the final week of the regular season. Rollins downed rival, No. 44 Florida Southern, 5-4, and closed the year defeating Florida Tech 6-3. The Tars jumped to No. 37 in the national polls to end the regular season.
Rollins enters the postseason with a record 18 SSC Men's Tennis Championship, but none since 2004. The sixth seeded Tars will open tournament action against the third seeded Lynn Fighting Knights, who are ranked No. 5 in the nation by the ITA. Lynn defeated the Tars 7-2 in early February, in a match that took place in Winter Park. No. 1 Saint Leo earned the top seed in the tournament, and will face eighth seeded Florida Tech in the first round. Barry, Lynn, and Palm Beach Atlantic round out the top four seeds, with Florida Southern, Rollins, and Embry-Riddle their respective challengers.
TRACKING THE TARS:
Nicolo De Fraia continues to lead the Tars as the No. 25 player in the nation. The junior remains 10-7 on the year, after resting during last week's contests. Sami Kirberg, who jumped to No. 42 in the country, filled in for De Fraia in the top position, going 2-0 on the week, to improve to 7-4 overall on the year. Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz sits at No. 69, and has compiled a 12-7 overall mark in the top three spots. Frederick Danielson has tallied a 7-5 record in his freshman campaign, on the fifth and sixth courts. Overall, the Tars are 54-65 in singles play.
De Fraia and Nicolas-Ruiz continue to lead the Tars in doubles as the No. 16 team in the nation. The pair are 8-7 overall, with two wins over nationally ranked opposition. Overall Rollins has used 18 doubles teams, who have combined to earn a 22-36 record in 2018.
TRACKING THE FIGHTING KNIGHTS:
Lynn defeated SSC foes Embry-Riddle, Florida Southern, and Eckerd, before closing the regular season with a defeat against national No. 1, and tournament top-seed, Saint Leo.
The Fighting Knights also put three players in the ITA Singles Ranking to end the regular season. Lynn put up an overall record of 69-35 in singles action in 2018. Jean Baptist Mateo moved from No. 9 to No. 6 in the final singles rankings, after going 14-2 on the year, in the first two positions. Kay Bartman, who is 8-8 playing on the top two courts, comes in at No. 46. Tristan Houle fell from No. 57 to No. 63. The senior is 11-7, having played in the each of the final four positions.
Eight partnerships have combined for a 32-22 overall doubles mark for the Fighting Knights. Three teams have taken the first court, and Lynn have gone 8-10 in that spot. Bartman and Jose Porfirio are 10-6 in the second position. Four teams have played in third doubles action for the Fighting Knights, earning a 13-5 mark.
The winner of the match between the Tars and Lions will advance to the SSC Tournament Semifinals, where they will face the winner of the first round match between second-seeded and No. 2 Barry, and seventh-seeded Florida Southern. That match is scheduled for Friday, April 20, at 2 p.m.
