WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 7, 2018) – A pair of singles titles highlighted the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational for the Tars. Atakan Gezer took the Flight A Singles Championship, while Frederick Danielson won the Flight B title at the Rollins hosted event. The Tars took on Saint Leo and Eckerd over the three day event.
The Tars took second and third in the Flight A Doubles draw. The duo of Nicolo De Fraia and Danielson took second in the bracket, defeating Kunz and Vega of Saint Leo in the first round, and their teammates Ziad Melhaoui and Guy Feigin in the second. Melhaoui and Feigin captured third place in the doubles competition.
Gezer cruised by Alasdair Knox in the first round of the Flight A Singles bracket. He then won a pair of three set marathons to take the championship. The sophomore downed Noel Kunz 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 in the final, winning the draw. De Fraia took third in the flight. Danielson also sailed by the competition in the first round of the Flight B Singles draw, defearting Eckerd's Same Walker 6-1, 6-2. The Memphis, Tennessee native faced his toughest test in the second round, defeating Lou Vega from Saint Leo 6-3, 4-6, 10-8. Danielson captured the title with a 6-2, 6-4 win over teammate Salvador Bolanos, who took second in the draw.
