WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 1, 2019) – Rollins opened 2019 in style, shutting out the visiting Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions, 7-0, at the Tiedtke Tennis Courts. Rollins starts the year 1-0, while UAFS drops their first match, to fall to 0-1.
The Tars earned the doubles point with a sweep of the Lions, all three Rollins teams earning 6-1 victories. Ziad Melhaoui and Gai Feigin defended their No. 17 national ranking in the first position. Frederick Danielson and Nicolo De Fraia teamed up for the convincing second court win, with Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz and Atakan Gezer sailing home in the third spot.
Freshman Andrea Brignacca made his impact felt with a quick victory on the sixth court to start singles action. De Fraia and Nicolas Ruiz picked up equally as convincing wins on the first and second courts, respectively, giving Rollins a 4-0 lead, and securing the win. Melhaoui, ranked No. 21 in the national singles poll, won in the third spot. While Feigin and Gezer saw out their matches as the Tars earned the shutout without dropping a set.
The Tars will face Bethune-Cookman in an exhibition match on February 13, then return to the court in an official capacity on Sunday, February 17, when they host Army West Point. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
