WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 9, 2019) – The Tars came up clutch, winning some vital points in a hotly contested 7-0 match against Wayne State. The Tars improve to 7-2 on the year, while the Warriors, the No. 4 team in the Midwest Region, fall to 7-3.
Ziad Melhaoui and Gai Feigin, who are currently slotted as the No. 17 doubles pair in the country, made easy work of their foes in the top doubles spot, winning 6-2. On both courts two and three the matches turned into battles. Nicolo De Fraia and Frederick Danielson clinched the point for Rollins with a 7-6 (5) tiebreak win on the second court. Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz and Atakan Gezer completed the sweep with a tiebreak win of their own on the third court, 7-6 (2).
Melhaoui, who also appears at No. 21 in the national singles poll, picked up the Tars lone straight set win of singles action, taking the third court decision 6-3, 6-3. Freshman, Andrea Brignacca gave Rollins a commanding 3-0 overall lead with a 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2 win in the sixth position. Gezer would clinch the match for Rollins with his fifth spot win, recovering from a first set defeat to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. De Fraia stumbled in his second set, but cruised home in the third, making the score 5-0 with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 top court victory. Nicolas-Ruiz put the Tars on the brink of the sweep by winning a third set tiebreak in his 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (2) second court win. Feigin would complete the shutout, taking the fourth position match 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-4.
Rollins will return to the friendly confines of the Bert Martin Tennis Complex to take on No. 22 Ferris State on Monday, March 11. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
