WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 11, 2019) – The No. 16 Tars just missed a Sunshine State Conference upset, falling to the No. 9 Saint Leo Lions 4-3 on the Bert Martin Tennis Courts. The loss drops the Tars to 13-5 overall, and 2-3 against conference competition. Saint Leo improves to 14-6 on the year, and 5-2 in SSC action.
Saint Leo took the first match of the day on the third singles court. Rollins would respond to win on the first court, and draw level in the battle for the doubles point. Ziad Melhaoui and Andrea Brignacca, the No. 19 pair in the country, earned a 6-2 win against the No. 43 team in the nation, Van Der Akker and Ciocanu. Rollins could not pull out the second court victory, losing a lead, as the Lions earned the point.
Saint Leo took a commanding 3-0 lead with wins in the second and third positions. The Tars would take the next two decisions in the fourth and fifth spots. Gai Feigin took a straight set win, 6-4, 6-4, in the fourth spot, and Atakan Gezer captured a first set tiebreak to win the fifth court match 7-6(9), 6-4. The Lions, however, sealed their win with a top court win. Brignacca tallied his second win of the day, to register the Tars' third point. The freshman was leading 5-7, 7-6(4), 2-1 when his opponent retired from the match.
The Tars will look to right the ship against Eckerd, tomorrow, Friday, April 12. First serve against the Tritons is set for noon at the Bert Martin Tennis Complex.
