WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 12, 2019) – Rollins returned to their winning ways, defeating Eckerd, 6-1, on a sunny afternoon at the Bert Martin Tennis Courts. The Tars improve to 14-5 overall, and move back to .500, at 3-3, in Sunshine State Conference action. Eckerd falls to 8-8 on the year, and 0-7 in the SSC.
The Tars took the first two doubles decisions, on courts one and three, to clinch the doubles point. Seniors Ziad Melhaoui and Daniel Ferl teamed up for the first time this season to capture a 6-3 victory in the top spot. Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz and Atakan Gezer continued their stellar team play in 2019, improving to 14-3 overall in the third position, also taking their match 6-3.
After one Tar was forced to retire, allowing Eckerd to pull even at 1-1. Rollins pulled off five consecutive singles wins to clinch the match. Frederick Danielson started the run, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win on the sixth court. Ferl tallied his second win of the day with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 performance in the fifth spot. Gezer clinched the overall victory for Rollins, sealing the fourth point with a 6-2, 6-2 win on the third court. The sophomore now sits at 15-1 overall. Nicolo De Fraia, the No. 13 singles player in the country, rebounded from his first defeat of 2019 to sail to a 6-3, 6-2 win in the first position. The senior improves to 17-1 in 2019. Nicolas-Ruiz rounded out the win for Rollins, taking a second set tiebreak to earn a 6-4, 7-6(4), straight set, victory.
The Tars close their home campaign, and celebrate the careers of six seniors, on Sunday, April 14, when they host No. 23 Palm Beach Atlantic. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
