Rollins Moves On in SSC Tournament

BRADENTON, Fla (April 26, 2019) – The Tars advanced to the Sunshine State Conference Tournament Semifinals with a 5-2 win over Embry-Riddle.  Rollins, ranked No. 10 in the nation, improves to 17-5 with the quarterfinal victory, while the No. 31 Eagles postseason run ends with an 8-11 overall mark.

The Tars earned the doubles points by taking the first two victories of the match.  Nicolo De Fraia and Frederick Danielson took a 6-4 second court decision, while Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz and Atakan Gezer won by the same score on the third court.  The Rollins duo of Ziad Melhaoui and Andrea Brignacca were ahead on th first court when the point was decided.

The Eagles won the first singles point, tying the match at 1-1.  De Fraia put Rollins back on top, cruising to a 6-1, 6-3 win in the first position, his fourth victory over a nationally ranked opponent this season.  Embry-Riddle would tie the score again before the Tars would go on a run to seal the win.  Freshman Andrea Brignacca put Rollins ahead 3-2 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the sixth court.  Gai Feigin and Atakan Gezer then clinched the match for Rollins, simultaneously winning their matches on the fourth and fifth courts, and punching Rollins ticket to the next round.

The fourth-seeded Tars take on top-seeded Barry in the SSC Tournament Semifinals, tomorrow, Saturday, April 27, at 10 a.m. 

The Bucs enter the SSC Tournament as the No. 2 team in the country, with an 18-1 overall record, and will face the Tars on a 13 match winning streak.  Barry defeated Rollins 6-1 in Miami Shores earlier this year.  Pierre Montrieul leads the team, and is ranked fourth in the country.  Led by Montrieul, all of the starting six players for Barry are among the nation's top-75, with Alejandro Ibanez Gallego at No. 27, Carlos Gomez at No. 28, Alejandro Ortega Palacios at No. 37, Daniel Ventura at No. 43, and Vivien Versier at No. 74.  Montrieul and Blake Bayldon form the Bucs top doubles partnership, with the pair at No. 10 in the ITA Rankings.  They are joined on the list by Gallego and Palacios, who sit at No. 41.
