Men's Tennis Competes in PBA Sailfish Invitational

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (September 22, 2019) - The Rollins Men's Tennis team traveled to West Palm Beach for the weekend to take part in the Sailfish Invitational, hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic University. Though the event does not count towards the team's overall season record (which begins in February), it was a valuable opportunity to see how the Tars look for the upcoming season.

A total of nine Tars saw action in the three-day event, with eight men competing in singles flights, and four teams competing in doubles flights. Frederick Danielson had the best overall singles finish with a third place effort in Flight #6. Two of the doubles teams also took home third place in their respective flights.

Singles

Danielson, a junior, defeated Miguel Paz of Palm Beach Atlantic (6-3, 7-6) to advance. In the semi-finals, he was bested by Florida Southern's Danny Thomas in a hard-fought three sets, (6-2, 3-6, 11-9). Danielson then wrapped up his weekend on Sunday morning by making quick work of Lynn's Adam Johannson, (6-1, 6-2). In the same flight, Leo Cordero dropped all three of his matches to finish eighth.

Flight five had two more Tars in action with freshmen Moritz Stenzer and Quinn McLeod competing. The two ended up facing each other on Sunday morning in the 7th place match, with Stenzer taking the match (6-4, 6-7, 10-8).

Mikkel Baumann made his Rollins debut in flight four. He took out Rodolfo Hasegawa of PBA in the first round, (6-4, 4-6, 10-6), before falling to David Perez of Saint Leo in three sets (7-6, 2-6, 11-9). He then squared off against Brian Pham of Florida Southern, taking the third set to extra points before losing (7-5, 1-6, 13-11).

Two more Tars competed in flight three, and finished with identical 1-2 records. Sophomore Andrea Brignacca lost to Tim Buettner of Barry (7-5, 6-2), followed by a win against Willem van den Akker of Saint Leo (6-2, 6-3) and a loss against Julian Turosienski of Keiser (5-7, 6-1, 10-7). Fellow sophomore Casey Recci dropped his first two matches before defeating van den Akker (4-6, 6-3, 10-6) on Sunday.

Atakan Gezer was the only player to compete in flight one. After falling to Carlos Gomez of Barry (6-0, 6-4), Gezer was able to bounce back in his second match, defeating Juan Marrero of Keiser (6-4, 6-2). He then fell to Lucca Baptista of Lynn, (6-2, 6-2) on the final day of play.

Doubles

Two teams of Tars played in flight three of doubles play. Mikkel Baumann and Casey Recci went 2-1, defeating Keiser (8-1) on day one, losing to Florida Southern on day two (8-4), and beating PBA (8-5) on day three to finish in third place. On the other side of the bracket, Luke Horan and Moritz Stenzer fell in their first match against Saint Leo (8-4), but rebounded to win their next two matches against Florida Southern (8-6) and Lynn (8-5).

Freddy Danielson and Quinn McLeod teamed up to represent the Tars in flight two. They fell in a close one against Lynn (9-8 (6)), and then dropped another versus Florida Southern (8-4).

In flight one, Atakan Gezer and Andrea Brignacca showed promise with a 2-1 record and a third place finish. They defeated Saint Leo 8-5 in their first match, followed by a loss to Barry (8-3). In their final matchup on Sunday, the duo were able to defeat Saint Leo 8-6.

The Tars are back in action this weekend, as they head to Pensacola to participate in the ITA South Regional. Matches will be played Friday September 27 - Monday September 30.
