ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (October 20, 2018) - Last weekend, October 13, the Tars left the friendly confines of Rollins' Alfond Boathouse before sunup to head down to the waters of Boca Ciega Bay for the fall's last points-regatta at Eckerd College.
The light winds were perfect for paddle boarding or water skiing, but often frustrating for sailing. And though a promising sea breeze kicked in for a few minutes that afternoon, it soon faded and the regatta was cut short.
The Tars had entered the day number seven in the southern division of SAISA (South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association). Despite a strong effort, the Tars finished the day still three points out of a slot in the divisions fall championship and unable to leapfrog number six Florida State.
Coach Herbster was upbeat, still finding a lot to be encouraged by from the fall campaign, "Qualifying for the championship would have been gravy for us. But even without that, there are so many positives with our team of about 25 kids who work hard every week to have fun and build this program."
On the horizon for the Tars is a home date on October 20 when sailors from University of South Florida, New College and Florida Institute of Technology come to the Rollins campus on Lake Virginia to compete in a "friendly."
