WINTER PARK, Fla - On Friday, November 10, 2017, the Rollins Baseball and Softball teams joined together to host the second annual Home Run Derby at Martin Luther King Park. The players came together, made co-ed teams and donated their own money to give a family in need presents for Christmas. This year they had a great turn out, raising 400 dollars, which is a hundred more than the total the previous year.
The event started at 8:30 p.m. and lasted two hours, over 442 homeruns left the park. The individual teams showed up in matching attire and even created their own names to add to the fun atmosphere. A bracket was kept and given to this year's winning team, "Cam's Ankle." The hitters on "Cam's Ankle" included, from the baseball team, Grant Ashline, Eddie Ayala, Joe Cosgrove, Luke Reidy, Nick Santucci and, from the softball team, Talia Kentoffio. The final round ended in a tie, but "Cam's Ankle" took home the prize after a sudden death round where each player got one swing to send the ball out. Kentoffio was the final player to hit and sent one flying over the fence to capture the title in walk off fashion.
The event started last year as a way for the teams to have fun and make an impact, and this year it grew into something special, that also helps a local family during the holidays. Abbie Sexton of the softball team coordinated this year's event with help of her brother, baseball player, Eric Sexton. "It's great to see two teams coming together to help a family in need, and what a better way than to hit a few dingers," said Abbie. The two teams plan to carry on the tradition and see it grow in the coming years.
