SET-UP:
After a last minute schedule shift, the Tars are set to take on a pair of opponents at the South Region Crossover this weekend in St. Augustine, Fla.  Rollins will start the event against the nation's No. 7 team, North Georgia, before taking on the host institution, Flagler to close the occasion. 

TRACKING THE TARS:
The Tars dropped three straight to open their 2018 campaign, but recovered late in the Gulf Coast Invitational to finish the weekend with a record of 2-3.  Rollins upset No. 11 Lee to get in the win column, then posted a convincing 9-1 result over Tuskegee for their second victory. 

Abigail Sexton and Chandler Middlebrook accounted for much of the Tars' offensive production.  Both went 7-17 over the fives games.  Middlebrook blasted four doubles, and drove in six runs, while Sexton drove home five Tars and scored five of his own.  Sarah Harrison Rollins on the base paths, swiping four bases without getting caught. 

Abby Summers and Grace Street both saw time in the circle for Rollins over the opening weekend.  Summers made four appearances, including three starts.  The junior went 2-2, pitching 25.1 innings and tallying 29 strikeouts.  The Weston, Missouri native is averaging 8.01 strikeouts per seven innings of work. 

TRACKING THE NIGHTHAWKS:
North Georgia cruised through the Gulf Coast Invitational last weekend, on their way to a 6-0 start the 2018 campaign.  The Nighthawks defeated receiving votes North Alabama, and No. 25 Lenior-Rhyne, shutout No. 3 West Florida 8-0, and dominated Miles 20-1. 

The Nighthawks put up 42 runs over the six games.  They were led at the plate by Sydney Sprague, who earned Peach Belt Player of the Week for her efforts.  The senior hit .368 over the weekend, launched three homeruns, tallying a .895 slugging percentage. 

In the circle Amber Johns paced the Nighthawks, also earning PBC Weekly Honors.  The sophomore pitcher went 2-0 with out giving up an earned run over 10.2 innings at the Gulf Coast Invitational.  The Powder Springs, Georgia native earned the shutout win over the No. 3 Argonauts, giving up just five hits. 

North Georgia opens play in St. Augustine against West Alabama and Embry-Riddle, before turning their attention to the Tars. 

TRACKING THE SAINTS:
The Saint defeated Lynn and Union (Tenn.) at the Southern Softball Showdown in Columbus Georgia.  However, Flagler's final two games, against Palm Beach Atlantic and Mississippi College had to be cancelled due to inclement weather. 

Natalie Murphy is coming off a Second Team All-Peach Belt Conference season, and she will look to continue to improve as a sophomore.  Garland Evans and Maria Kappos paced the Saint offense in their first two games.  Both hit .571, going 4-7 from the plate, with two RBI.  Kappos also registered a double, and stole a bag. 

First Team All-PBC Honoree Ally Marcano returns.  The sophomore tossed a complete game shutout against Lynn, allowing just one hit, and striking out seven. 

The Saints face West Alabama twice, and Embry-Riddle on the opening days of the event, then close the slate against Rollins. 

NOTES:

  • Rollins is 1-3 all-time against the North Georgia Nighthawks.
  • The Tars are 6-3 all-time when facing the Flagler Saints.
  • Sarah Harrison is only 13 steals away from breaking onto the Tars' all-time top-10 list, while her current stolen base percentage of .903 would place her in a tie for sixth all-time.
  • Michelle Frew is 771-325-1, and ranks as the 16th winningest active coach in Division II. 

NEXT:
The Tars will take on Sunshine State Conference favorite Saint Leo, as they appear at the friendly confines of Rollins Softball Stadium for the first time in 2018.  The three game set will begin on Friday, February 16, with a 7:00 p.m. contest and end with a double header on Saturday, February 17.
