SAINT LEO, Fla. (February 22, 2019) – The Tars fell behind early, and could not complete a comeback, falling 4-2 to the Saint Leo Lions in Sunshine State Conference action. With the defeat Rollins falls to 7-2 overall and 2-2 in SSC play. Preseason conference favorites Saint Leo improve to 8-7 in 2019, while moving to 3-1 in the Sunshine State.
Lindsey Gehring again paced the Rollins offense. The catcher blasted her third homerun of the season, while tallying both RBI for Rollins, and finishing the night as the Tars only player with multiple hits. Sarah Harrison went 1-2 at the plate and scored a run. Ashley Worrell got the start in the circle, tossing a complete game, giving up four runs, three earned, and picking up her second loss of the year.
Saint Leo got on the board in their first at bat. The Lions loaded the bases with no outs. The Tars almost escaped, but, after getting two outs, an infield single and a walk made the score 2-0. A Rollins error led to the Lions extended their lead in the third. Gehring earned the Tars first run in the top of the fifth, knocking a solo homerun over the left field fence. However, Saint Leo would get the run back in the bottom of the inning, scoring their fourth run on a fielder's choice. The Tars loaded the bases in the sixth, but were only able to get one run across, coming on a Gehring walk. Rollins put runners on every bag again in the seventh, but could not pull closer as they dropped the series opener.
The Tars and Lions will finish their three game set with doubleheader action tomorrow, Saturday, February 23. The first game of the twin bill is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
