Rollins looks to continue their stellar start to the 2019 campaign by taking on another highly touted Sunshine State Conference foe. Rollins is coming off a series victory against the preseason SSC favorite, Saint Leo, and will now face the team picked to finish third, the Tampa Spartans. The Tars and Spartans currently sit third and fourth in the conference standings. Rollins fell in the series opener at Saint Leo, but then took the final two games from the Lions to clinch the three game set. Tampa has taken two out of three from Eckerd and Florida Southern. Both teams will take the field in Winter Park with eyes towards the top of the SSC standings.
WHO TO WATCH:
The Tars are coming off two wins against Saint Leo, including one extra inning victory, last time out. Rollins bats were again led by sophomore catcher Lindsay Gehring. Gehring hit two homeruns against the Lions, and now sits atop the SSC with four homeruns on the season, boosting her conference leading slugging percentage to 1.000. The Fort Lauderdale native leads the team in RBI, and on base percentage, and is second in batting average. Jordan Davis leads the conference with a .514 average. The centerfielder has also scored nine runs, and stolen 10 bases. Sophomore Talia Kentoffio is batting .375 and freshman Ashley Worrell is batting .364 for Rollins.
Worrell and seniors Abby Summers and Grace Street have created a formidable pitching rotation for Rollins. The Tars lead the SSC with 1.18 ERA. Worrell has tallied a 4-2 record eith a 1.75 ERA in 36 innings. Summers struck out 48 batters in just 29 innings, while Grace street has yet to allow a run in 12 innings.
The Spartans are batting just .227 on the year, the second lowest team average in the SSC. Cristina Clauberg leads the way for Tampa, hitting .344 so far in 2019, and is the only Spartan starter hitting over the .300 mark. The junior leads the team in doubles, with three, and is second in RBI with seven. Corynn Miner leads Tampa with nine RBI. The sophomore has tallied one double, one triple, and one homerun on the year. Sam Worrell has blasted two homeruns and paces the Spartans with a .457 slugging percentage.
Spartan pitching trails just the Tars for ERA among SSC schools, tallying a 1.55 ERA. Makaleigh Dooley was named an NFCA Preseason All-American and was listed on the NFCA Player of the Year Watchlist. The senior is 8-1 so far this season, amassing just a .75 ERA, while fanning 67 in 55.2 innings. She is relieved by Miner, who has tallied a 2.84 ERA in 24.2 innings, and Worrell who registered a 1.24 ERA in 5.2 innings.
- It's a family affair, as Rollins freshman Ashley Worrell takes on her sister, Tampa senior Sam Worrell.
- The Tars are 48-63 all-time against Tampa, but are 6-4 in the last ten meetings.
- Jordan Davis is tied for ninth in Rollins history with 43 steals.
- With two wins last weekend, Head Coach Michelle Frew now sits at 807, 29th all-time in wins among NCAA Division II coaches. Next on the list is Kevin Blaskowski with 820 wins.
The Tars return to non-conference action, hosting doubleheaders against Davis & Elkins on Monday, February 4, at 5 p.m. and Emmanuel on Tuesday, February 5, at 5 p.m.
