Pitching Leads Tars to Sweep of Spartans

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 9, 2019) – Led by a pair of solid pitching performances, the Tars completed a sweep of the Tampa Spartans with 1-0 and 3-0 wins at Rollins Softball Stadium.  The Tars move to 12-2 on the year, and 7-2 in Sunshine State Conference action.  Tampa, who received votes in the latest NFCA National Poll, falls to 10-5, while dropping below .500, at 4-5, in SSC action.

Game 1:
Ashley Worrell went 2-3, while Lindsay Gehring picked up an RBI double for Rollins.  Jordan Davis scored the game's only run.  Abby Summers starred for the Tars.  The senior tossed an complete game, giving up only two hits, and striking out 14 Spartans.

Summers started the game by striking out the side in the first, and the Tars gave her all the run support she would need in the bottom of the inning.  Jordan Davis reached on a bunt single and stole second, before Gehring roped a double over the right fielder, plating Davis.  The Spartans threatened in the fifth, but Summers was able to retire Stephanie Balmer looking to get out of the inning, stranding runners on first and second.  Summers registered at least one strikeout in every inning, and sat the Spartans down one, two, three in the seventh to seal the win.

Game 2:
Gehring and Tayler Holt each picked up two hits to pace the Rollins offense in game two.  Holt scored a run, and Gehring added two RBI.  Grace Street drove in the other Rollins run, going 1-3 with a double.  Street also shined in the circle throwing a complete game shutout, while surrendering two hits.

After a leadoff single for Tampa Grace Street retired the next 19 batters she faced, not giving up another baserunner until the seventh.  The Tars would get on top in the fifth.  Brianna Ernst slapped a leadoff single back at the pitcher, before moving to second on a Raiven Bryant sacrifice.  Tayler Holt singled, and a Worrell intentional walk loaded the bases.  Gehring came through with a bloop single that scored two.  Street followed with an RBI double, as Rollins took a 3-0 lead after five.  Tampa recorded just the lone, one out, single in the seventh, but could not garner another baserunner, as Street got the final two outs.
