MELBOURNE, Fla. (March 4, 2019) – The Tars swept the Sunshine State Conference weekly awards, after sweeping Tampa on the field over the weekend. Lindsay Gehring picked up Player of the Week Honors, while Abby Summers was named Pitcher of the Week. It was the first SSC weekly award for both players.
Gehring went 4-9 over the series with the Spartans. The sophomore ended the series with four RBI, a homerun, a double, and one run scored. Gehring hit her SSC leading fifth homerun of the year in the Tars' 4-1 Friday night win. She picked up the only RBI of the game with a first inning double in game two, then capped the series with a two RBI performance in game three. The catcher leads the SSC in batting average, homeruns, and slugging percentage, while she is second in on base percentage and tied for third in RBI.
Summers started game two of the series for Rollins. The senior threw a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits in a full seven innings of work, while striking out 14 batters in the contest. Summers currently ranks second in the SSC in both ERA, 0.78, and batting average against, .096. The Weston, Missouri native is averaging over 12 strikeouts per 7 innings of work this year.
The Tars turn around quickly, and will return to the field later today, Monday, March 4. Rollins faces Davis & Elkins in doubleheader action at Rollins Softball Stadium, first pitch is set for 5 p.m.
