WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 9, 2019) – Rollins continued to roll through the competition, shutting out Davis & Elkins in both legs of doubleheader action at Rollins Softball Stadium. The Tars took game one 5-0 and game two 8-0 in six innings. Rollins improved to 14-2 during the 2019 campaign. The Senators fall to 1-11 overall.
Lindsay Gehring and Grace Street each tallied two hits to lead the Tars. Abigail Sexton went 1-4, scoring two runs, and driving in two others. Tayler Holt slapped a RBI double, while Kara Wagstaff, Brycyn Smith, and Brianna Ernst each scored for Rollins. Ashley Worrell got the start for Rollins, giving up just one hit over four innings. Abby Summers entered in the fifth, and tossed three perfect innings for her first save of the season.
Holt got the Tars on the board in the second frame, driving home Sexton with a double to right center field. After the Senators put runners on second and third with no outs, Summers retired the next three batters to hold the advantage in the top of the fifth. The Tars would then put the contest out of reach in the bottom of the inning, scoring four. The Tars would load the bases for Sexton who singled home a pair of runs, making the score 3-0. After the Tars loaded the bases again Amanda Guglietta was hit by a pitch to drive in a run and Emily Zientek walked to plate the fifth Rollins tally. Summers would strike out the side in the seventh to secure the Rollins victory.
Jordan Davis and Grace Street each went 2-2 with a run scored, while Street added a pair of RBI and a homerun, to lead Rollins; offense. Ashley Worrell also sent the ball over the wall, and tallied four RBI in the contest. Abby Summers continued her momentum from game one, tossing a complete game, giving up three scattered hits, and striking out six.
Davis reached on a leadoff bunt, and stole second before Street plated her with a two out RBI single, getting Rollins on the board in the first inning. The Tars would load the bases in the second, and extend their lead to 3-0 with sacrifice flies from Raiven Bryant and Worrell. Street made the score 4-0 with a leadoff homerun in the third frame. Rollins would end the game in the sixth. They loaded the bases again, setting the stage for a Cynthia Whitty to lift a scacrifice fly to center field, making the score 5-0. Worrell then ended the game with a three run homerun to centerfield.
Rollins will play another out of conference doubleheader tomorrow, Tuesday, March 5, when they host Emmanuel. First serve is set for 5 p.m.
