WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 8, 2019) – The Tars had their nine-game winning streak snapped as they opened a road series against Palm Beach Atlantic with a 5-4 loss. The Tars could not hold on to a late lead as they fall to 16-3 overall and 7-3 in Sunshine State Conference play. The Sailfish improve to .500 overall, at 13-13, and 3-4 in SSC action.
Jordan Davis tallied two hits and scored two runs, while Lindsay Gehring drove in a pair, and blasted her league leading sixth homerun of the year to pace the Rollins offense. Abby Summers got the start for Rollins, throwing 6.1 innings, giving up four runs, three earned and striking out seven. Grace Street entered in the seventh with the Tars in a jam, and was unable to get the final two outs, surrendering one unearned run.
Davis reached on a leadoff single, and made her way around the bases, before scoring on a Gehring fielder's choice, as the Tars jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one inning of play. Gehring sent the ball over the left field wall, making the score 2-0 in the third. The Sailfish would get the run back in the bottom of the inning, after a lead off triple resulted in a run. Brianna Ernst started the sixth with a double, and crossed the plate courtesy of an Amanda Guglietta single, giving Rollins a 3-1 lead. Davis would give the Tars a 4-1 lead in the top of the seventh, capitalizing on a throwing error by the Sailfish. However, the three run lead would not hold up for the Tars. Palm Beach Atlantic loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. The Tars gave up a pair of free bases on a hit batter and a walk, making the score 4-3, before a Rollins error tied the game. The Sailfish would win in walk off style, when a single to the shortstop plated one and made the score 5-4.
The Tars and Sailfish will finish their three game set with doubleheader action tomorrow, Saturday, February 23. The first game of the twin bill is scheduled to get underway in West Palm Beach at 1 p.m.
