WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 9, 2019) – Rollins used clutch hitting to take a back oand forth first game, but could not carry the momentum into game two, as the Tars split doubleheader action against the West Chester Golden Rams. Rollins earned the 6-5 victory to open the day, while West Chester took the second leg 3-1. The Tars end the day at 20-5 overall. The Golden Rams sit at 10-7 after today's action.
Abigail Sexton went 2-3 at the plate and scored a run for Rollins. Grace Street hit her fourth homerun of the season, and tallied three RBI in the contest. Jordan Davis also recorded a two hit game. Abby Summers got the start and tossed 3.2 innings, surrendering three runs and striking out three. Street entered in the fourth to get her fourth win of the season, tossing 3.1 innings, giving up two runs, and fanning four.
Ashley Worrell and Lindsay Gehring both got on base in the first, setting the stage for Street's three run blast, which sailed over the left field fence. A Brianna Ernst RBI single scored Talia Kentoffio to give Rollins a commanding 4-0 lead after three. However, the Golden Rams put up crooked numbers in the fourth and fifth to take a 5-4 lead into the late portions of the contest. A leadoff double by Sexton set the stage for the Tars in the sixth. The senior came home when Sarah Harrison reached base on a West Chester error, and tied the score. Harrison scored later in the frame when Lindsay Gehring was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, giving the Tars a slim advantage. Street made easy work of the Golden Rams in the seventh, retiring them in order to seal the win.
Ashley Worrell, Lindsay Gehring, and Talia Kentoffio all registered a multi-hit game, but Rollins could not string enough offense together to down West Chester for the second time. Worrell threw a complete game giving up three runs, all earned, and striking out five.
The Golden Rams jumped out to a lead in the third, manufacturing a pair of runs. They would extend their lead to three with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. The Tars would quickly pull that run back; a Gehring double plated Worrell in the bottom of the frame, making the score 3-1. But, that was as close as Rollins could get, with leadoff baserunners wasted in both the sixth and seventh frames.
Rollins and Southern Connecticut State are set for doubleheader action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 13. First pitch against the Owls is set for 1 p.m.
