WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 13, 2019) – Rollins earned a doubleheader sweep over the Southern Connecticut State Owls under sunny skies at Rollins Softball Stadium. The Tars sailed home game one, winning 6-0, before taking a pitcher's duel in game two, 1-0. With the wins the Tars improve to 22- 5 overall in 2019. The Owls continue to struggle, dropping to 1-9 on the season.
Brycyn Smith took full advantage of her first siginificant at bats in a Rollins uniform, going 2-3 on the day with two doubles and two RBI. Ashley Worrell blasted a home runs and scored twice to help the Rollins offense, while her pitching kept the Owls at bay. The Freshman picked up her tenth win, throwing a complete game shutout, and striking out four.
Worrell would give Rollins the lead in the first with her third homerun of the season. The Tars would then use a two out rally in the second frame to open the game up. Sarah Harrison singled to center, driving in Abigail Sexton. Brianna Ernst then swiped home on a double steal, then finally, a Jordan Davis bunt single brought home Harrison., making the score 4-0 after two. The bats went silent for the middle portion of the contest, the biggest threat came from the Owls, but Worrell managed a strikeout to end a bases loaded threat in the fourth. The Tars would tack on two more in the sixth, Worrell and pinch runner Jenny Goldsher, crossing home plate on Smith's double. The Tars then saw out the top of the seventh for their eleventh shutout of the year.
Lindsay Gehring blasted a homerun to account for the games only score in the second contest. It was the sophomore's team leading seventh of the season. Katie Eicher starred in first appearance in the circle wearing the Blue and Gold. The freshman allowed just four scattered hits while fanning seven in a complete game shutout, earning her first collegiate win.
After two quick outs Gehring lined a shot over the left field wall to give Rollins the early lead. The Owls had an opportunity to tie the game in the fifth, but a strong throw from Jordan Davis in center field retired an ambitious Southern Connecticut State baserunner, preserving the lead. Rollins would cruise home for the rest of the game, with Eicher striking the final batter as part of a one, two, three seventh inning.
Rollins returns to Sunshine State Conference play on Friday, March 15, when they host Florida Southern. The series opener is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
