Rollins Shuts Out Eckerd in Series Opener

Rollins Shuts Out Eckerd in Series Opener

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 29, 2019) – After seven scoreless innings, the Tars found their bats in the extra frame, and captured a 4-0 win over Eckerd to start their three game series.  With the win Rollins improves to 28-5 overall and pad their Sunshine State Conference leading mark to 12-4.  Eckerd falls to 11-23 on the year, and 3-13 in SSC action.

Jordan Davis earned three hits, but it was the bottom of the Tars' order that did the damage.  The six, seven, eight, and nine hitters, Abigail Sexton, Brianna Ernst, Tayler Holt, and Sarah Harrison each tallied a RBI, while Sexton and Ersnt added runs to their stat sheets.  Reigning SSC Pitcher of the Week, Ashley Worrell tossed another gem for Rollins, coming off a no-hitter in her last appearance.  The freshman threw a complete game, allowing just five scattered hits, and striking out five in the shutout.

Both teams escaped jams in the first as both offenses put two runners on, before the pitchers settled in.  Worrell sat down the Tritons in order in the second, third, and sixth, while the Tars' defense turned double plays in the third, fourth, and sixth to help keep Eckerd off the board.

Lindsay Gehring was hit a by a pitch to start the Tars' rally in the eighth.  Her pinch runner, Kara Wagstaff, then made her way to second on a Triton error.  Talia Kentoffio moved both runners into scoring position with a groundout, giving Rollins runners on second and third with one out.  From there Sexton, Ernst, Holt, and Harrison slapped back-to-back-to-back-to-back singles to score four runs and blow the game open.

Worrell allowed only a two out walk in the bottom of eighth as the freshman coolly saw out her 14th win of the season.

Up Next:
The Tars and Tritons will finish their three game series with a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, March 30.  The first game of the twin bill is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m.
